What’s so hard about changing?

WHy is it so hard to change
I know I know, you just want to have a quick fix, so what’s so hard about changing?
Below are the 18 prime directives of the unconscious mind. This impacts on why it’s so hard to make changes. I’ll explain more below.  For now, just have a read and digest it, you may need to read it a couple of times.
  1. Store memories (stores all your experiences whether you remember them or not)
  2. Domain of emotions (your emotions are stored deep in your unconscious, your concious awareness of your emotions is all it is, it’s been interpreted by your logical and critical concious mind and that’s what you believe to be your emotions).
  3. Organise all memories (Your unconscious mind organises all your memories based on time, so you can tell what is past and future memories. When you remember a past experience, you will only remember a perception of it. This is based on your beliefs and values that you had at the time. This will then be filtered again based on your present beliefs and values. This is why time is a good healer).
  4. Repress memories with unresolved negative emotions (Your unconscious will hold back anything negative that will affect your wellbeing. If the cost is too high, it will not allow you to remember them, which is why you may not recall certain aspects of your past)
  5. Presents represssed memories for rationalisation (Your unconscious will only present memories for you to deal with when it knows you can cope with them, clever hey?)
  6. Keep repressed emotions repressed (protection) (Your subconscious mind may never bring forward negative repressed emotions, if it’s not in the interests of your wellbeing. This happens because you’ve pushed them down repeatedly, so it decides not to bring them up again)
  7. Runs the body (Your subconscious takes care of everything outside of your awareness, everything you may take for granted. Your thoughts and emotions change your physical body. If you hold in the negative emotions for too long, you can develop disease in your body)
  8. Preserve the body (Your unconscious mind has a blueprint for cell creation and perfect health. So it’s always looking after you)
  9. To be a highly moral being (Your beliefs and values are very important to the unconscious mind, these are created by experiences you have. Your motivation and behaviour is controlled by your morals).
  10. To be a servant, to follow orders (you say and it believes) (Your subconscious mind will give you what you ask for, it doesn’t deal with “not’s” – see point 18),
  11.  Control and maintain perceptions (Your subconscious mind uses that self-talk as an instruction to do something, it believes things to be real as it can’t tell the difference between real and fantasy.  It can misinterpret and hold a perception that you believe to be real/true when it isn’t.)
  12. Generate, store, distribute and transmit energy (It controls where the energy in you goes to enhance your wellbeing. We all have a lot of energy in us, but often it doesn’t do anything.  It’s just there if we need it. How interesting is this… you can change your energy level just by thinking it. Try it!)
  13. Respond with instinct and habit (Your habits are an unconscious action, if you can create something into a habit, it helps you achieve your goals).
  14. Programmed to continally seek more (curiousity) (For example if you say something negative, your unconscious will look for evidence of it. It keeps doing it until you decide to change the belief you’ve formed. Depending on what you’re telling your unconscious mind, it will look for ways to back up and reinforce that statement e.g. I’ll never find the right job)
  15. Does not need parts to function (Works best when everything is in alignment. When we have our integrity in balance both in mind and body, you can see amazing results. Science proves that the mind and body are connected, when working in harmony, you’ll have a much more enriched life)
  16. Symbolic (uses and responds to symbols) (Your subconscious mind uses shapes and symbols to store information. People can often see images, pictures, shapes when asked about a past experience, this is the brains neural network at work, it’s created images from the data collected, creating these shapes and images etc to express an experience and any meaning attached to it).
  17. Works on the principle of least effort (If there is a simple way to get results, your subconscious will take that route. If you don’t know what you want, you will be confused as you’ll get mixed results. With this one, if you aren’t specific then your subconscious mind takes it literally. If you want a new job, it will achieve that but it might not be the one you want if you weren’t specific).
  18. Does not process negatives (Easy one, state what you want rather than what you don’t want e.g. I don’t want to oversleep, I want to wake up on time.  The subconscious mind reads the first example as “I want to oversleep” as it doesn’t process the “don’t” as it’s negative. Get it?

The low down

With all that in mind, look at number 17. Your subconscious wants make the least effort, it is driven to take the easy route.  You need to be specific in what you want in order to get it.
Number 9 also plays a part, because your motivation is affected by your values and beliefs. How successful are you going to be at losing weight if your values and beliefs are in conflict with your goals? For example, “I don’t deserve to be thin”, you believe you deserve to be fat or anything than thin.  That isn’t going to motivate you!
Number 11 affects making changes as well, because if you believe something to be true, then your subconscious will support you in that belief. Again, not making it easy to make the changes you seek. See how important your values and beliefs are. This is an area that I focus on in my P.E.A.C.E framework and cover on my courses.
Number 12 is an interesting one, if you “act as if” you have energy, your subconscious believes it and will support you in that.  If you have energy, this may help and support in your desire to make changes in your life.
Number 13 is all about habits and these are important if you’re looking to change your old, unhelpful or unhealthy habits into something new.
Number 18, Start changing your negative talk into positive, it will transform your life.
Others in the list relate to, so hopefully now you can see how it can be hard to make the changes you want in your life, but by looking at these directives, those changes are possible.
